Designing for Rest — Why Your Bedroom Matters More Than You Think

We are so pleased that so many of our clients have been asking us to redesign their bedrooms recently. It seems to be a room on everyone's mind at the moment — and we couldn't be happier about it, because the bedroom is so often the room that gets forgotten. We spend roughly a third of our lives in our bedrooms, so it makes sense to give it the care and consideration it deserves. There is something we love about being invited into this particular room - it is the most private and personal space in the house - so it feels like a real privilege when a client asks for our help.

The bedroom is the most important room in your home

It is well documented that the quality of your sleep shapes your mood, your energy, your relationships and your overall wellbeing, and the environment you sleep in has a profound effect on the quality of that sleep.

A bedroom that feels cluttered or unloved sends a signal to your brain that you are not quite off duty yet. Visual clutter such as piles of clothes triggers your brain to start processing unfinished tasks and a chaotic space prevents relaxation. A bedroom that feels calm, considered and beautiful does the opposite — it tells your mind and body that it is safe to let go, that the day is done and your brain can switch off, allowing you to fall into a deep relaxing sleep.

What a restful bedroom actually needs

Experience has shown us that the bedrooms our clients love the most share certain qualities that have nothing to do with budget or square footage.

Calm Over Clutter

A restful bedroom is an edited one. That doesn't mean it has to be minimal or cold — warmth and comfort are essential — but every element should earn its place. If something doesn't contribute to the feeling of the room, it probably doesn't belong there.

Considered Light

Lighting is everything in a bedroom and it is one of the most overlooked elements of the design. You need blackout at night — properly fitted, well-made window treatments that do the job — and you need warm, layered light in the evening that helps your body wind down. Overhead lighting alone is rarely the answer. Think bedside lamps, wall lights, a statement ceiling light that works on a dimmer.

Texture and Warmth

The bedroom is the one room in the house where you interact most physically with your surroundings — you touch the bedding, you feel the rug underfoot in the morning, you reach for the cushions before you sleep. Texture matters here more than anywhere else. Soft, natural materials — linen, velvet, wool, cotton — bring a warmth and sensory comfort that no amount of clever styling can replicate.

Colour That Cocoons

The days of keeping bedrooms safe and neutral are well and truly behind us. Some of the most restful bedrooms we have created have featured the deepest, richest colours — warm greens, soft terracottas, enveloping taupes — colours that make the room feel like an embrace rather than a blank canvas. The ceiling deserves just as much consideration as the walls — painting it in the same tone, or a shade deeper, draws the eye upward and creates a wonderfully cocooning, enveloping atmosphere that a plain white ceiling simply cannot achieve. Don't be afraid of colour in a bedroom. Used well, it is one of the most powerful tools for creating a sense of calm and sanctuary.

Storage That Works

Nothing disturbs the peace of a bedroom like visual clutter — and visual clutter almost always comes down to storage that isn't working hard enough. Getting the storage right, whether that means reimagining existing wardrobes or designing something entirely new, is one of the most transformative things you can do for the overall feeling of a room.

The question we always ask

At the start of every bedroom project we ask our clients the same question — how do you want to feel when you walk into this room? Not what colours they like, not what style they prefer, but how they want to feel. That answer shapes every decision we make from there.

Rest, calm, luxury, escape are the words that come up again and again, and they are what we keep coming back to throughout the whole design process.

Your bedroom should be your favourite room

If it isn't — if it is the room you walk past rather than into, the room that feels unfinished or unloved, the room that has never quite come together — then perhaps it is time to change that.

You spend a third of your life there. It deserves to be somewhere beautiful.
